From a sacred substance to a substance abuse, the coca leaf in Latin America, especially in Colombia, has gone from being an important part of Amerindian culture to becoming an icon associated with cocaine and the war on drugs. As a medicinal and ritualistic plant the coca leaf has been used by our people for over 8000 years; as a commercial commodity it has been used by many societies (such as an ingredient in Coca-Cola ®) for just a little over 100 years; and as an illegal distilled substance known as cocaine the coca leaf has been extracted and consumed by dominant societies for merely the past 40 years.
Connecting ceramic material culture and architectural space to the coca plant, Chie Bchusqua aims to bring into consideration the consumption and commercialization of the plant, while presenting the audience with its original use, the unapologetic act of chewing coca leaves. |

500 años de resistencia indigena en Gainesville Florida
(500 years of indigenous resistance in Gainesville Florida)
Physical appearance in Latin America plays a big role in the social and political structure. As it has been for quite a while, a western European physical appearance is much preferred rather than a native indigenous one. Because of this there is shame if your happen to have a cara de indio or an Indians face.
The people represented in these portraits are examples of those who resist the oppressing ideas that we have been forcefully woven in our ruanas, in our chuyos, or in our molas. Presenting to the world themselves as proud and aware of who they are. As a work in progress this becomes a testament to the never ending resistance of indigenous people of the Americas. |

200 tells of my relationship to the city of Jingdezhen in China and the community around the Sculpture Factory. The impact I would leave in there, would not be a material one but rather a relational one. What I left there was the chance for an idea to transcend as a story, to travel through the memories of those who were and weren't there. And while majority of the material used was not personally kept, it was allowed to be re-purposed by those who live there.
